OLD Food Deserts (CC4.a)


Description
Course Description:

This module will introduce students to the concept of food deserts and their effects on community health. Students will use the Arizona Department of Health Services Geographic Information System (GIS) Application to identify nearby food deserts.

Course Topics:

1) Food desert definition
2) Food access as a social determinant of health
3) Health outcomes from living in a food desert
4) Identification of nearby food deserts using the Arizona Department of Health Services Geographic Information System (GIS) Application

Learning Objectives:

1) The CHW student will know how to seek out the appropriate information and respond to questions and pertinent topics
2) The CHW student will understand how to participate in community assessment through observation and active inquiry
3) The CHW student will learn how to use pertinent technology
4) The CHW student will understand the social determinants of health and related disparities
5) The CHW student will learn about pertinent health issues
6) The CHW student will learn about the community served
