(MH) Health Literacy for Seniors (In-Person) ((MH)HLS-IPT)


Description
Health literacy enables individuals to be actively involved in managing their health. Unfortunately, many in the community CHWs serve are affected by low health literacy levels, which prevent them from engaging in health-promoting behaviors. Primarily Spanish-speaking seniors are disproportionately affected by low levels of health literacy. This course will prepare CHW students to become champions for health literacy in the community by providing the tools to teach health literacy lessons to ESL seniors.

Course Topics:
1) Health literacy as a social determinant of health
2) Barriers to health literacy
3) Health literacy and the senior population
4) Health literacy and the ESL population
5) Developing an action plan before a doctor’s appointment
6) Steps to improving confidence with health literacy

Learning Objectives:
1) The CHW student will know how to communicate using plain and clear language
2) The CHW student will understand how to communicate with empathy
3) The CHW student will know how to communicate with the community served
4) The CHW student will know how to facilitate the development of an individual and/or group action plan and goal attainment
5) The CHW student will know how to help others to identify goals and develop to their fullest potential
6) The CHW student will understand how to use empowering and learner-centered teaching techniques
7) The CHW student will know how to use a range of appropriate and effective educational techniques
8) The CHW student will know how to plan and conduct classes and presentations for a variety of groups
